ANSWERS

1. (a) Ministry of Railways
The Indian Railways on July 12, 2018 launched its first consolidated Bridge Management System (IR-BMS), a web-enabled IT application that will store data on its 1.5 lakh railway bridges. The system was launched by Railway Minister Piyush Goyal. The launch comes days after a bridge in Mumbai collapsed on a railway track.

2. (b) BSNL
State-run telecom company Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited (BSNL) on July 11, 2018 launched its first internet telephony service ‘Wings’ that will allow users to dial any telephone number in India through its mobile app.

3. (c) Jack Ma
The United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres on July 12, 2018 constituted a High-Level Panel on Digital Cooperation. The panel will be co-chaired by Melinda Gates, Co-Chair of the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, and Jack Ma, Executive Chairman of Alibaba Group.  

4. (d) PK Sinha Task Force
The Union Government on July 12, 2018 constituted a high-level task force under the Chairmanship of Cabinet Secretary PK Sinha to identify various items and policy interventions to reduce dependence on imports. It task force would suggest ways to cut import of those items which can be manufactured or explored in the country.

The United Nations Security Council (UNSC) has adopted Resolution 2427 to protect children in armed conflict. It aimed at providing legal framework for mainstreaming protection, rights, well-being and empowerment of children throughout the conflict cycle. 

6. (b) Andhra Pradesh
On July 11, the Andhra Pradesh government launched the much-awaited ‘Anna Canteens’ in various parts of the state that will offer subsidised food for the poor. About 100 canteens were opened in 35 Urban Local Bodies (ULBs) in the first phase.

Himachal Pradesh’s Kagra district has introduced a new rule at its petrol pumps –‘No helmet, no petrol’. According to an order issued by the Kangra deputy commissioner- Sandeep Kumar, if two-wheeler riders land up at any of the 71 petrol pumps in the district without helmet, they shall not be served.

8. (b) Mohammad Kaif
Mohammad Kaif announced his retirement from all forms of competitive cricket on July 13, 2018, almost 12 years after he last played for the Indian team. The 37-year-old Kaif played 13 Tests and 125 ODIs for India. During the five years that he was an India regular, it was his electric reflexes inside the 30 yard circle, especially the cover region that made him special.

India has surpassed France to become the world’s 6th largest economy, as per World Bank data on the gross domestic product (GDP) of countries for 2017. The data revealed that India recorded a GDP of USD 2,597,491 million in 2017, while France recorded a GDP of USD 2,582,501.

10. (d) Hima Das
Sprinter Hima Das on July 12, 2018 scripted history by becoming the first Indian woman to win a gold at the IAAF World Under-20 Athletics Championships as she clinched to top spot in the women's 400 m final race on the third day of competitions in Tampere, Finland.

11. (c) India
The Telecom Commission of India has approved the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India's (TRAI) net neutrality recommendations that bar service providers from discriminating against internet content and services by blocking, throttling or granting them higher speed access. 

12. (a) Supreme Court
The Supreme Court of India has stated that the social stigma and discrimination attached to the LGBTQ community would go if the criminality of consensual gay sex is done away with. The court stated this while maintaining that it would scrutinise the constitutional validity of section 377 of the IPC in detail.
