Answers with Explanation

1. (d) Five

The National Mission for Clean Ganga (NMCG) organised “Ganga Vriksharopan Abhiyan” in five main stem Ganga basin states – Uttarakhand, Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, Jharkhand and West Bengal from 9th July to 15th July 2018. It has been observed as ‘Shubharambh Saptah’. The campaign has been initiated as part of the Forest Interventions in Ganga (FIG) component of Namami Gange programme.

2. (a) Myanmar

Myanmar on July 19, 2018 joined the India-initiated International Solar Alliance (ISA), thus, becoming the 68th signatory to the Framework Agreement of the ISA that aims for optimum utilisation of solar energy.

3. (b) Rs 100
The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) on July 19, 2018 announced to shortly issue Rs 100 denomination banknotes in the Mahatma Gandhi (New) Series, bearing signature of Dr Urjit R. Patel, Governor of Reserve Bank of India. The base colour of the note is Lavender.

India saw a major reduction in the number of new HIV infections, AIDS-related deaths and people living with HIV from 2010 to 2017 on the back of sustained and focussed efforts, according to a UN report.

5. (c) Google


The UN Environment Programme (UNEP) has partnered with Google to monitor the impacts of human activity on global ecosystems by using sophisticated online tools. The purpose of the partnership is to develop a platform to enable governments, NGO’s and the public to track specific environment-related development targets with a user-friendly Google front-end.

6. (a) Anil Swarup committee
The Union Government constituted a committee under the Chairmanship of Anil Swarup to suggest measures to strengthen National Cadet Corps (NCC) and National Service Scheme (NSS). The Committee will deal with issues like expansion, strengthening training infrastructure, rationalizing resources, reducing manpower deficiency affecting NCC and NSS.

The Minister of External Affairs Sushma Swaraj and Defence Minister Nirmala Sitharaman will host the US Secretary of State Michael R. Pompeo and US Secretary of Defence James Mattis, in New Delhi on September 6, 2018 for the inaugural two plus two dialogue between the two nations. 

8. (b) WhatsApp


WhatsApp announced on July 20, 2018 that its users in India will not be allowed to forward more than five chats at once. As part of its efforts to reduce circulation of fake messages on the platform that have even incited mob lynching incidents, the company said that it will remove the quick forward button that appears next to media messages.

9. (c) Japan 


India and Japan held the fourth round of Maritime Affairs Dialogue in New Delhi on July 19. The dialogue meet provided a platform to India and Japan to exchange views on various topics of mutual interest including the Indo-Pacific region, maritime security and cooperation in Humanitarian Assistance and Disaster Relief. 

10. (c) Haryana

Haryana Chief Minister Manohar Lal Khattar has sanctioned Rs 9 crore under the Road Safety Fund for procurement of state-of-the-art equipment and vehicles to prevent fatalities in road accidents, check drunken driving and overspeeding and upgrading the e-challan system.

Veteran actress Rita Bhaduri passed away in Mumbai, Maharashtra on July 17, 2018. In her over three decades-long career in the entertainment industry, Rita acted in over 70 movies like Raja, Julie, Beta, Dil Vil Pyar Vyar and 30 TV shows including Sarabhai vs Sarabhai, Choti Bahu, Kumkum, Khichdi and many others.

12. (d) Tamil Nadu 

The Tamil Nadu government has informed the Madras High Court that a 24-hour helpline has been set up to investigate issues faced by inter-caste couples and offer them necessary assistance and protection.
